Large datasets computing is a research problem as well as a huge challenge due to massive amounts of data that are mined and crunched in order to successfully analyze these massive datasets because they constitute a valuable source of information over different and cross-folded domains, and therefore it represents an irreplaceable opportunity. Hence, the increasing number of environments that use data-intensive computations need more complex calculations than the ones applied to grid-based infrastructures. In this way, this paper analyzes the most commonly used algorithms regarding to this complex problem of handling large datasets whose part of research efforts are focused on reducing dimensional space. Consequently, we present a novel machine learning method that reduces dimensional space in large datasets. This approach is carried out by developing different phases: merging all datasets as a huge one, performing the Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) process, applying the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithm to machine learning techniques, and finally displaying the data results by means of dashboards. The major contribution in this paper is the development of a novel architecture divided into five phases that presents an hybrid method of machine learning for reducing dimensional space in large datasets. In order to verify the correctness of our proposal, we have presented a case study with a complex dataset, specifically an epileptic seizure recognition database. The experiments carried out are very promising since they present very encouraging results to be applied to a great number of different domains. This work was partially funded by Grant RTI2018-094283-B-C32, ECLIPSE-UA (Spanish Ministry of Education and Science), and in part by the Lucentia AGI Grant. Get PDF
This paper draws a brief comparative history of suburban transport in Madrid and Barcelona, from its beginnings in the Franco’s dictatorship to 2015. The justification of this study is that the two cities absorb the vast majority of those services; but also that the differences in the investments have been and are a relevant political argument that questions the role of the Central Administration as manager of transport infrastructures. The truth is that Madrid and Barcelona are, from the perspective of periurban transport, cities with very different problems, which also started from historical situations not comparable. Hence the need to make a historical and geographical analysis that exceeds the limitations of economic tools. The main conclusion of this paper is that between Madrid and Barcelona there has been a process of convergence in the provision of transport services

Behaviors related to body image are influenced by learning and sociocultural environment; the parents can contribute to their children’s food prob-lems through social values that they are supporting. Furthermore, it is known that during the development of the body image of girls it is fundamental the identification with the parent of the same sex. However, the extent of maternal influence is unknown, so our aim is to analyze the relationship between thoughts and behaviors of mothers and the development of their daughters’ body image, specifically on the variables: perceived image and ideal image, satisfaction and concern about body image, and social network behaviors. The study involved 53 pairs of mothers and daughters, the latter being girls with a normal body mass index and aged between 9 and 13 years. The results show that there is a relationship between the behavior and thoughts of mothers and the development of body image of girls on a cognitive and behavioral level. We conclude that mothers play an important role in the development of body image as though all girls are within normal weight, differences were found in body image of girls in terms of the variables evaluated in mothers.

In recent years, information integration systems have become very popular in mashup-type applications. Information sources are normally presented in an individual and unrelated fashion, and the development of new technologies to reduce the negative effects of information dispersion is needed. A major challenge is the integration and implementation of processing pipelines using different technologies promoting the emergence of advanced architectures capable of processing such a number of diverse sources. This paper describes a semantic domain-adaptable platform to integrate those sources and provide high-level functionalities, such as recommendations, shallow and deep natural language processing, text enrichment, and ontology standardization. Our proposed intelligent domain-adaptable platform (IDAP) has been implemented and tested in the tourism and biomedicine domains to demonstrate the adaptability, flexibility, modularity, and utility of the platform. Questionnaires, performance metrics, and A/B control groups’ evaluations have shown improvements when using IDAP in learning environmentspost-print2139 K

The objective of this work was to determine the genetic diversity, yield, and fruit quality of persimmon genotypes grown in the tropics, in order to select promising genetic materials. DNA extraction was performed on young leaves of 19 persimmon genotypes. For pomological characterization, 15 genotypes were selected. From each genotype, 50 fruit at the physiological maturity stage were harvested in the morning, in order to determine the following parameters: physicochemical characteristics; and the productive variables number of fruit per plant, average fruit fresh mass, average yield, and estimated average yield in two seasons. Twenty SSR markers were tested, out of which 12 were selected to evaluate genetic similarity, which allowed of the identification of distinct groups. The mean genetic diversity value found was 0.41, which is an indicative of low diversity among the analyzed persimmon genotypes. The 'Guiombo', 'Iapar 125', 'Kakimel', 'Mikado RJ', 'Rama Forte Tardio', and 'Taubaté' genotypes show a high yield. The genotypes classified as pollination-constant astringent ('Pomelo', 'Regina', 'Rubi', and 'Taubaté') and those classified as pollination-variant astringent ('Rama Forte', 'Guiombo', and 'Cereja') are potential materials for selection and genetic breeding programs due to their excellent fruit physicochemical characteristics. The investigation through molecular markers is an efficient approach to study the genetic diversity of persimmon genotypes grown in the tropics

Current trends in medicine regarding issues of accessibility to and the quantity and quality of information and quality of service are very different compared to former decades. The current state requires new methods for addressing the challenge of dealing with enormous amounts of data present and growing on the Web and other heterogeneous data sources such as sensors and social networks and unstructured data, normally referred to as big data. Traditional approaches are not enough, at least on their own, although they were frequently used in hybrid architectures in the past. In this paper, we propose an architecture to process big data, including heterogeneous sources of information. We have defined an ontology-oriented architecture, where a core ontology has been used as a knowledge base and allows data integration of different heterogeneous sources. We have used natural language processing and artificial intelligence methods to process and mine data in the health sector to uncover the knowledge hidden in diverse data sources. Our approach has been applied to the field of personalized medicine (study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases customized for each patient) and it has been used in a telemedicine system. A case study focused on diabetes is presented to prove the validity of the proposed model. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) under Project SEQUOIA-UA (TIN2015-63502-C3-3-R) and Project RESCATA (TIN2015-65100-R) and in part by the Spanish Research Agency (AEI) and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) under Project CloudDriver4Industry (TIN2017-89266-R)

The new Internet of Things paradigm allows for small devices with sensing, processing and communication capabilities to be designed, which enable the development of sensors, embedded devices and other ‘things’ ready to understand the environment. In this paper, a distributed framework based on the internet of things paradigm is proposed for monitoring human biomedical signals in activities involving physical exertion. The main advantages and novelties of the proposed system is the flexibility in computing the health application by using resources from available devices inside the body area network of the user. This proposed framework can be applied to other mobile environments, especially those where intensive data acquisition and high processing needs take place. Finally, we present a case study in order to validate our proposal that consists in monitoring footballers’ heart rates during a football match. The real-time data acquired by these devices presents a clear social objective of being able to predict not only situations of sudden death but also possible injuries. This work has been partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO/FEDER) under the granted Project SEQUOIA-UA (Management requirements and methodology for Big Data analytics) TIN2015-63502-C3-3-R, by the University of Alicante, within the program of support for research, under project GRE14-10, and by the Conselleria de Educación, Investigación, Cultura y Deporte, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain, within the program of support for research, under project GV/2016/087. Conductivity measurements of food systems are of high interest because they are related with food characteristics such as free water and salt content. Nevertheless, as far as now no devices have been developed for punctual conductivity measurements inside solid foods. The aim of this work was to develop a conductimeter which allows obtaining punctual measurements in different locations of solid foods. The sensor consists of a coaxial needle while an electrical sign controlled by microcontroller is applied. The preliminary results indicate that the obtained response is proportional to the conductivity and the salt content in the zone of measurement of the food, being possible its use for salted food analysis and control
